Violence In Computer Games – Is It A Problem?

As we move into a new era should we examine a lot of the things we do and the way we look at life? What about violent computer games for example.

The Video Game Violence Controversy:- Not surprisingly, varying opinions are held on the issue of violence in video games. Since some studies indicate that as many as fifteen percent of gamers show signs of video game addiction, the presence of violence in games is equally troubling to some.

Parents:- Many parents are concerned about the influence games have over their children. They wonder whether certain games will cause their children to exhibit aggressive behaviors which they otherwise would not.

In fact, several instances exist of children who have, in fact, planned attacks on others based on specific gameplay. At least a handful of these have actually been carried out. Parents are rightly concerned that their children are not unduly influence to display antisocial and criminal behavior.

Gamers:- The opinion of gamers on this issue is all over the map, but most serious gamers are content to let individual gamers make up their own minds. They acknowledge that a few isolated incidents exist where gamers appear to have been encouraged in taking violent actions based upon a specific game, but point out it was likely the individual would have found some other example to model, such as a movie, television show, or book.

Ministers and educators:- Many influential persons such as ministers and educators feel that the presence of violent video games is bad for society. Their existence provides a degree of legitimacy for the use of violence. Young people may get the idea that it perfectly acceptable to use violence to resolve personal conflicts rather than seek alternative methods.

Legislators:- Our law makers have also become involved in the controversy. Many Congressional hearings have been held to debate this issue. Laws have been passed both at the national and local level, with many cities passing laws banning specific games. These cities' laws are often later overturned.

Gaming industry:- In response to initial legislation during the 1990s, the video gaming industry created the Entertainment Software Rating Board which rates video games (similar to ratings for films). This was essentially a self-policing action designed to prevent further intrusion by various levels of government.

Ratings include: EC (Early Childhood), E (Everyone), Everyone 10+, Teen, Mature, Adults Only, and Rating Pending.

The ratings serve to guide parents and their children about the appropriateness of specific games to the child's age and maturity level.

In addition, video games contain "content descriptors" on the back of the game to further describe the game's content.

Conclusion:- The controversy over video game violence will certainly not be resolved anytime soon. In fact, it will probably escalate along with the advances in graphics and gameplay with the major gaming consoles. The best approach is to stay informed and to make decisions based upon what is right for you and your family.

The WiiWare Games Network

WiiWare is Nintendo's offering in a similar fashion to Microsoft's Xbox Live Marketplace or the Sony Playstation Network. It gives you a way through which you can access games online and developers can easily distribute cheap games over an internet connection. It is not yet as well established as its counterparts from it's competitors but even so some true gems are already available that are unlike anything you'll find on the other networks. Here are three examples to check out:

#3: Gyrostarr
Gyrostarr is a racing game unlike anything you have probably ever played before. Simple yet engaging, while providing up to 50 levels of gameplay, it is a worthwhile addition to anyones WiiWare library.
In essence, it is a space-shooter and racer wrapped up in one. Select your ship and prepare to be blown away as you are sent blasting down a tunnel of space tubing. The objective is to use your ship's grapple arm to seize power orbs before you reach the tunnel's gate, to open it. As you fly through each tunnel, you'll see plenty of power ups that can also be grabbed with your grapple, and enemies that you will need to shoot down.

Gyrostarr includes both single-player and local multiplayer options. The multiplayer is rather best described as cooperative play, because even though each player is competing for a high score, both are assisting each other to power the gate. Gyrostarr is a worthwhile game that should not be missed.

#2: Lostwinds
WiiWare games are unique because the motion controls provide new ways to play. LostWinds is no different. The simple story involves a boy named Toku, who meets a wind god name Enril. Together they set out to save their village from impending darkness and doom. But what stands out is that you control Toku with the Nunchuk, and Enril with the Wii Remote. Using swishes of the Wii Remote, Enril can produce blasts of wind that contribute greatly to the platformer aspects of the game. It is often that there is a ledge that you cannot reach, and the only way to do so is to jump with Toku, then create a blast of wind with Enril that will launch you up to your destination.

Many puzzles await surrounding this mechanic. And besides that, the gorgeous graphics and scenery are sure to suck you in.

#1: World of Goo
World of Goo is possibly the wierdest and most addictive game available on WiiWare. The basic objective is stick together blobs of living goo in each level to form a path to pipes that suck them in. The remaining blobs roll over the makeshift path to their destination. The gameplay I find very reminiscent of Lemmings, but it holds it's own very well with a cute, quirky style and bizarre humor.

Being an instant-classic of a puzzler, this is one WiiWare you should get above all others.

SD101 Top VGM #24 – Wii Shop Channel (Brawl / Wii Console)

^^ I definetly haven't seen this on any other top vgm list. But hey, the Wii Shop Channel is still awesome on the Wii and it's probably the best channel cause it's the only one that still has enough reason to come back to it while most others have lost their touch. And after downloading 30+ titles off the channel, this music is stuck in my head.
